ADOPTION

Adoption as a programme for rehabilitation of Orphaned and destitute children is one of the pioneering efforts of FSC initiated in 1962.  The programme works on the basic principle of - Best interest of the child while helping the couple to build a family and rehabilitation on the Birth Mother.

Over the years not only has the process of adoption undergone a major change but Family Service Centre has also widened its area of interventions. We have seen changes in attitudes, acceptance of Adoption as a viable option for child in need of such care; and also not only the childless couples but even ones with biological kids are coming forward to adopt a child. JJ Act 2000 amended in 2006 is a legal document emphasizing the need to promote this programme as among the various non – institutional forms of rehabilitation of child, Adoption is one of the most recommended forms of permanent rehabilitation. It provides a loving and nurturing environment to the child; a family of its own.

Rehabilitation Of Birth Mother :  Adoption begins with Birth Mothers who relinquish their babies. They are counseled about procedures, consequences and rehabilitation of child entrusted in our care.Even, the mothers are helped to move ahead in their lives by counseling them on life skills and positive attitude towards life.

Pre-adoptive Foster Care : We have been the forerunner of this programme ever since it has been initiated. We believe that child has a right and need to be brought up in a family from birth itself, and hence have Foster families with whom children are placed until the child goes to its permanent home post adoption. These families are from varied backgrounds with motivation to care for an unrelated child as their own. They are trained, registered and regularly monitored by our professional staff.

Prospective Adoptive Families: They are the most important stake holders in the process. We counsel them, ease their discomfort, clear their concerns and apprehensions along with assisting them with legal formalities. The couples undergo a rigorous screening process of interviews, home visits, orientation meetings etc. to assess their preparedness to adopt a child. Support Group is  organized once a year to provide  them a platform to come together and share their happiness.

The following article summarizes the feelings of an adoptive mother very eloquently:

One phrase deeply etched in my mind is if you cannot become Devaki become Yashoda. This inspired me to go in for adoption, as the epitome of motherhood is Yashoda. After 7 long harrowing years of infertility, i found this avenue ( adoption ) to fulfill my maternal instincts. It was like my rehabilitation.

Thus Aman came into my life. I heard all the proverbial bells ringing in my ears which a person hears on love at first sight. He showed remarkable confidence in me from day one as he unquestioningly took me as his mother, bringing with him all the joys and the pains of motherhood. His first tooth, his first step, his first 'mama' , 'papa' , all the milestones, plus his injuries, the late nights, the worries, his slightest illness would give us sleepless nights. My bundle of joy brought with him a surprise gift, Aastha, my biological child, making me Devaki also.

Over the years the thin line between Devaki and Yashoda has vanished and the two have blended me into a unique mother. My heart goes out to Aman's biological mother, especially on his birthdays, and i hope for some divine medium to convey my thanks and indebtedness to her as i am experiencing all the emotions which are rightfully hers. God Bless her, wherever she is.

Thanks a million to Family Service Centre. God bless you too. Please keep up the good work as our world needs more like you.
